I suspect that another of the commonalities is genes. It doesn't necessarily seem fair, but living to an advanced age is a heritable trait.

Absolutely. I would add, intelligence, athletic ability, personality characteristics, and more. It's all so unfair. The heredity verses environment debate manifests itself politically. The left believes humans are infinitely malleable and born good; the right believes we are limited by our genetic endowment and are born with bad proclivities. That spills over into the leftist conclusion that if we do not have equality of outcome, then nefarious forces on the right caused it.

Acute observation. And yes, the left have to believe humans are infinitely malleable to claim that the state--the environment--creates the person, and the state can perfect the soviet worker.
