I have the view that any arguments based on supposed knowledge of another persons basic character should be ignored since it's inherently unknowable. Until the coming of hate crime laws this was a given, only prosecute people for their actions not, their thoughts. (You can pass a law against robbing banks, but not against wanting to rob banks, the answer to "you can't legislate morality." ) Trump is a threat to very powerful people, so he has been demonized. Personally, I don't think he is as bad as you think, but like I said, I cannot see his soul.

David, exactly. If hate crimes are against the law, then that validates any accusation. Motivation is important - ie he accidently pushed his wife over the cliff or he planned to murder her. Same action, different motivation. If it's premeditated - hate is not relevant. I didn't mean to demonize Trump, but his actions - his motivation - seem often ego -centric, and sometimes cruel and nasty. We are all self-centere,, but he takes it to a new level. My gosh, the alternative, Kamala and Tim Walz, would have legitimized everything woke. Looking forward to reading your post on hate crimes.
